They were driven back by the combined forces of the Greeks and nature, rock slides and a massive thunderstorm dismaying the superstitious Celts, who retreated in disarray.

4 101 X In 278 BC three Galatian Celtic tribes entered Anatolia as mercenaries. Despite their defeat in battle in 275, they successfully took over the area which became known as Galatia. Loosely united politically, the Celts of Galatia subsequently terrorized the region for several centuries, raiding for cattle, plunder and captives whom they held to ransom or sacrificed to their gods.

Bribed to depart, they returned to swell the settlements of north Italy. The following years saw both peace and conflict with their Italian neighbours until the Celts were subdued by the Romans after a crushing defeat in 225 BC.
